Our Own Personal "Pet" Project
& The Story Behind It
Prince and Pals
Driven by the desire to turn a really sad childhood story of an abandoned dog named Prince into a positive, we decided to recognize nonprofits that specialize in rescuing unwanted and abandoned dogs (really, ALL animals). This page is curated by a team of people who love dogs, of all shapes, sizes, breeds, and colors, and we just happen to work together too. Our mission is to bring awareness of the many no-kill adoption and rescue organizations across the United States whose goal is to save these precious animals and find them good homes.
We have no judgement here…we just want to educate and enlighten people that no matter what your circumstances are, there’s always a place to bring your unwanted animal. It makes no difference to us whether you can’t afford it, you don’t want it, you changed your mind and decided you don’t like it or you’re just tired of it/over it. We want you to know there’s a place that will help. Do the right thing, bring them to a rescue/adoption organization first. And if you can’t find a please, email us at hello@princeandpals.com. We will help.
Our Story
My mother loved dogs. Doesn’t everyone? One would think…yes. But I can assure you, many people don’t. Her love of dogs started with a handsome mutt named Prince. When mom was 14, her dad, my grandpa Jimmy, moved the entire family from Boston, Massachusetts to Carmichael, California to start a taxicab business. Sounds like a cool adventure except for one small detail…he wouldn’t let her take Prince. She was devastated. Nothing worse to do to a young girl than make her leave her dog.
She tried living with the loss only because her favorite uncle said he would take the dog in and care for him. Unfortunately, she discovered years later that he never took care of the dog and in fact, abandoned him to the streets. She never got over it. My mom passed in 2016. 4 days before she passed she called me crying because she was still so very wounded by the thought that her sweet dog was abandoned, and she was lied to in the process.
This is a sad story. Believe me - I heard it for 54 years. Mom went on to adopt and rescue dogs my whole life. We got my first dog when I was 3. And since the apple fell right over to her daughter, I ended up with the same love for mutts and rescues. The Bible says that all tragedy can be used for good. And so I’ve decided to turn my sweet mom's heartbreak into something for good. Follow us while we try to change the world, one dog, one rescue at a time.
In honor of my mama, Theresa Marie Heater, welcome to Prince and Pals.
